What Jesus Taught Us by His Example
Denying the Darkness of Death
Eileen Renders March 2024
The title of this article may appear to be a bit mystifying as we surely know that we cannot escape the fact that we all must at some time, or another succumb to dying. That is, dying to this earth, to a life that we once lived. If this idea borders on the philosophical, it is meant to do exactly that.
What I want to convey is that in approaching death, it is not that our miraculous body that God created has not surrendered to disease or old age, rather it has heard our creator’s call and is willingly and submissively answering that call.
We were all born to parents and a family where we were nurtured and received love. We also learned to return love, and that it is God who sends us love and a unique being born in the likeness of God, our soul.
In First Grade, or before receiving the sacraments Reconciliation and Holy Communion we are taught that God created us for the following reasons; To know Him, love Him, and serve Him in this world so that one day we can be happy with Him in heaven for all eternity.
With that knowledge and understanding, it is good to remember that we are not sliding into the depths of darkness upon our death. No, we are submitting ourselves body and soul into the hands of God. Although our time here is enjoyable and does provide some sense of security, it is important to keep in mind why we were born, and that we are called to live a good life and return to our creator. Accepting death is a way of showing our faith and trust in a God who loves us. Our loved ones will one day join us in our heavenly family for eternity. In showing our trust in God at the time of our departure, we are also solidifying the strength a faith in our loved ones as they witness our acceptance and faith in God’s will. For this passing is nothing more than our deliverance, and we are free.
