The Our Father and repeated prayers
Before I get started, I wanted to share this video with you: What Does "Eat My Flesh" Mean? (PART I). I don't really go over this in this article, but, it's a good addendum to it.
I'm a little behind on getting my article done for today, so, I don't intend on this going on too long. I know A LOT of people will use Luke 24:35 as a proof text for the Real Presence of the Eucharist, and that's fine, but, let's consider what else Luke says about the Eucharist, and I want to focus on one verse in particular.
In Luke, 22:20, it says the following,
"Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for."
And, surprise! It's not just Luke!
In Mark 14:24, it says, "And he said unto them, this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many."
And, working our way back to Matthew, it says, in Matthew 26:28, "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."
So, why is this important?
Because shedding of blood is a SACRIFICIAL term in this context.
Well, do we have any biblical evidence, namely from the Book of Leviticus.
I'm not going to go through every single verse, and, keeping in mind the King James Version does have an inherent Protestant bias (great Bible, beautiful even, but, it some areas, it does), it may not say it exactly the same in your Bible.
"He slew also the bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people: And Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled upon the altar round about" (Leviticus 9:18)
Of course, there's more I could say (and read Leviticus on your own to find out WHY), but, my point is this; Jesus's followers would know what he meant. They would know the words of sacrifice. And they would know WHY he used the terminology he did.
Contra some people who claim "But, they were illiterate fishermen", they still would have known The Torah.
