Children are a blessing
I know I mentioned to my friend, Crystal, that the poor are closer to God. Well, yes! But, why is that?
Because God is close to the poor.
Lest anyone have any delusions, I am aware that poverty is not a good thing.
I don't support government redistribution of wealth, but, I do think the poor need our help.
I just don't think that's the best way to do it.
(If we are going to do that, let's start with career politicians!)
I am not against you if you're wealthy, or from wealthy backgrounds. You're not my enemy. (Unless you made your money by oppressing the poor).
Let's recall the Sins that cry to heaven, shall we? Bet y'all thought I'd forgot!
One of those sins, is oppressing the poor. (What Are Sins That Cry to Heaven for Vengeance and Sins against the Holy Spirit?)
So, let's see what the verse Catholic Answers cited says.
"Now after a long time the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel groaning, cried out because of the works: and their cry went up unto God from the works."
(Exodus 2:23)
It had been a while since I used the Douay Rheims (truth be told, I prefer it to the King James Version, but, both have their pros and cons).
Anyway, I am not sure that verse gives best explanation, so, let's look at some other ones.
"And Jesus sitting over against the treasury, beheld how the people cast money into the treasury, and many that were rich cast in much.
And there came a certain poor widow, and she cast in two mites, which make a farthing.
And calling his disciples together, he saith to them: 'Amen I say to you, this poor widow hath cast in more than all they who have cast into the treasury. For all they did cast in their abundance; but she of her want cast in all she had, even her whole live.'"
(Mark 12:41-44).
By the way, consider the fact she's a widow. I'm not going to share it here, but, READ Mark 12:40, because that will really explain why that's relevant.
Note something though.
All the rich people were putting in a bunch, and she put in all that she had.
She KNOWS that God is responsible for her blessings (and no, I am not saying this teaches the EXTREMELY false and dangerous health and wealth gospel).
Did you know that Jesus says "Blessed are the poor"?
Now, a lot of people will say, "he says Blessed are the poor in spirit"!
This is true, he DOES say that. (Matthew 5:3). But, people tend to forget; Luke 6:20,
"And he, lifting up his eyes on his disciples, said: Blessed are ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God."
The poor are promised THE KINGDOM OF GOD, so yes, the poor are closer to God.
Y'all may wonder why I care so much about it, because I'VE LIVED it.
I've had a widowed mother, and lived off of SSI after my dad died. (Life in poverty).
I could give you a ton more verses, but, as the St. Louis Jesuits sang, "The Lord Hears the cry of the poor".(The Cry of the Poor – St. Louis Jesuits [OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO]I actually like Catholic folk music, my dad was a folk singer, more about that, soon).
Try being poor, and you'll know what it's like to know how to depend on God.
