On the Second Sunday of Easter, we celebrate the feast of Divine Mercy Sunday. God’s mercy is clearly and definitively manifest in Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection. Jesus not only preached about forgiving others, but he also put those teachings into action. One example that comes to mind is when he hung on the cross. “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” This in itself was the greatest outpouring of mercy.
In his three years of public ministry, we can recall the numerous times Jesus illustrated God’s mercy from those suffering physically, spiritually, or even socially. Whether it was the cripple man, the man who could not see, the woman caught in adultery, or those who took part in his betrayal and execution.
The mercy Jesus shares is abundant and available to all. We must share it with others. It began with his ministry. It was manifested on the cross. Now, it is to be shared with others. The psalmist reminds us, “His mercy endures forever.”
Recall in the Lord’s prayer, “Forgive us our trespasses. As we forgive those who trespass against us.”
It is through mercy that we learn love.
Through mercy, we help heal the hearts in misery.
Through mercy, we learn the art of forgiveness.
Through mercy, we learn to be peacemakers and to share peace with others.
Through mercy, we learn to become Christ’s ambassadors to bring union to the whole church.
Mercy begins with us and that it must be passed on to every faithful follower of Jesus Christ
“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”
