The Eucharist has always been known as the Sacrament of Unity. This is a reason the Eucharist is called Holy Communion and is the inspiration for the Eucharistic Revival in the United States this summer. The Eucharist brings about a three-fold unity: Union with God first and foremost, then union with the Church as the Body of Christ fulfilling the Sacraments of Initiation, and finally union with one’s dignity as the Church shines the light of grace to the individual soul.
The Mother of Light Center in Alexandria, VA embodied this triple union by doing a Eucharistic Day to help their Single Mother’s Group (the St. Ann’s group) come together to contact the Eucharist. The women first were taught about the Eucharist and discussed its meaning for their lives. Then they came together to make a beautiful mural of the Eucharistic Lord embodying how the Blessed Sacrament revives us in life. First, they came to the Lord in prayer as the ladies were led in prayer. Then each of them laid a leaf representing something going on in their life which they wanted to give to the Lord. As each of them gave to the Lord, it brought the community together, supporting one another simultaneously bringing peace to all involved. As they finished the project, they realized that in giving to Jesus, He not only brought them together, but also they were made new taking in the light of our Eucharistic Lord which dwelt in their hearts. Afterwards, the ladies went from the icon to the reality by visiting Jesus in the Church and left filled with Eucharistic joy knowing their dignity and immeasurable worth regardless of life’s situations.
This is the point of the Eucharistic Revival! For all to be united more intimately to Jesus and in doing so, with one another and their dignity. Let us continue to live out this Eucharistic Revival in our lives by coming together to be icons of our Eucharistic Lord.
