He Feeds Us in Ways We Don't Expect
The Gospel today reminds us that Jesus can open our eyes gradually to what He is doing in our lives so that we recognize His presence. In fact, that’s exactly what He did with His disciples after the Resurrection.
Has your life ever felt like a puzzle and you’re not quite sure how all the pieces fit together to make a whole? You’re not sure how this intermingling of suffering and resurrection works together. You’re puzzled by how life is playing out. You’re confused about which way you should go or what you should do next. You’re afraid of that next step.
I think that’s how the disciples felt before Jesus opened their eyes to see how the puzzle pieces fit together for the glory of God. Scripture says that they were surprised and terrified, and that questions arose in their hearts.
Then notice how Jesus was made known to them in the Eucharist and the Word of God. That gives us a cue that we too can find answers and a cure for our fears, unsettledness, and questions: Jesus is present in them both. Sense-making happens when we are ingesting God’s body, blood, and words.
If we look for Jesus’ presence in our lives, and consistently ingest the Eucharist and the Word of God, we’ll find Him showing us “what it all means” just like the disciples. Gradually, our fears, questions, and confusion will melt away as God reveals Himself and His plan to us. It is His way of increasing our hope and trust in His goodness.
