Advertisers in Parish Bulletins: A Reflection for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12)
I have long had a fascination with President John F. Kennedy (JFK), Senator Robert F. Kennedy (RFK Sr), Senator Ted Kennedy, and other Kennedy family members. My fascination has probably been strongest for RFK Sr and his branch of that family.
Call Me Bobby
In 1965, I recall my great aunt being thrilled by a chance encounter with RFK Sr at St Patrick's Cathedral, while he was there for his son Max's baptism. When my great aunt greeted RFK Sr, he asked her to "Call Me Bobby." The old Irish woman was totally charmed (Though I was only 6, I sensed that my own mother was far less impressed!). I myself was charmed by RFK Sr's appearance on Wonderama!
From 1968, I vividly recall RFK Sr's funeral Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral, Andy Williams' acapella Battle Hymn of the Republic at the close of Mass, the train to D.C. and the burial at Arlington. My letter of sympathy was acknowledged with a memorial card sent by franking instead of a stamp.
In 1980, near the 59th Street subway station in Manhattan, I shook hands with RFK Jr, as he campaigned for his uncle Ted.
Personally Opposed
When JFK and RFK Sr were alive, being pro abortion had not yet become a de facto pre requisite for their party....
any Kennedy desiring higher office in the Democratic Party must now carry the torch of abortion rights throughout any race....
in the early '70s, ...Democratic politicians first figured out that the powerful abortion lobby could fill their campaign coffers (and attract new liberal voters). Politicians also began to realize that, despite the Catholic Church's teachings to the contrary, its bishops and priests had ended their public role of responding negatively to those who promoted a pro-choice agenda....
At a meeting at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport, Mass., on a hot summer day in 1964, the Kennedy family and its advisers and allies were coached by leading theologians and Catholic college professors on how to accept and promote abortion with a "clear conscience."
The former Jesuit priest Albert Jonsen ....writes about how he joined with the Rev. Joseph Fuchs, a Catholic moral theologian; the Rev. Robert Drinan, then dean of Boston College Law School; and three academic theologians, the Revs. Giles Milhaven, Richard McCormick and Charles Curran, to enable the Kennedy family to redefine support for abortion. (Wall St Journal, 1/2/2009)
It was not long after RFK Sr's assassination that we started to see so many seemingly shameless pro abortion "Catholic" politicians. As I previously wrote....
The idea probably became most entrenched because of Jesuit priest, Robert Drinan, who was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1971–1981) and consistently voted in a pro-abortion manner. With Father Drinan and other pro-abortion Catholics [apparently] going uncorrected and undisciplined by Church authority, the 1970s may have been an even more confusing time for Catholics than our own. Father Drinan remained in Congress until early in the pontificate of Pope St. John Paul II, who ordered him to leave politics. (Catholic Stand, 6/8/2022)
RFK Jr & Pee Wee Herman
I watched Raymond Arroyo's 4/25/2024 interview with RFK Jr. (Sorry, the title of this article was merely a hook! When he first came to EWTN fame, a friend noted the resemblance between the late "Pee Wee Herman" and Raymond Arroyo.).
RFK Jr is trying a variation of that old "personally opposed, but" strategy for attracting those of us who KNOW that legal abortion is legal murder.
RFK Jr is also trying to capitalize on some misguided notions coming from Catholic circles.
"Crises" are NOT the only thing that leads people to killing preborn children. Largely because of silence (or worse) from pulpits, large swaths of people have convinced themselves that there is nothing wrong with killing children before birth!
We need legislation and education, in addition to material assistance to those who need it.
