A topic I never want to write about again
"Thou shalt have none other gods before me"- (Deuteronomy 5:7)
I was listening to the Alternative Country group, Uncle Tupelo (where Son Volt and Wilco came from, also, unpopular opinion, Son Volt is a better band), and Uncle Tupelo has a song called "Still be around",(Still Be Around) which contains the following lyrics.
"When the Bible is a bottle, and the hardwood floor is home, when morning comes twice a day, or, not at all", etc etc. Those lyrics are obviously about alcoholism.
One thing I don't talk about often is the effect alcohol has on me. I'm not a teetotaler, but I rarely drink. Why is that?
Because, the amount of vodka, tequila, whisky (or whiskey, depending on where you're from, and how pretentious you are), I drank, did me in for a while.
You see, I was not a happy teenager. I've had a very hard life.
And I dealt with that through alcohol.
But it's a lie that these things will bring you happiness, no matter how much fun it looks like those people on billboards are having. Also, if you're not supposed to drink and drive, why is alcohol advertised on highway billboards? At least here in the United States it is.
It's also important to note that drunkenness is one of the sins of the flesh listen in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. Yes, it is a MORTAL SIN to get drunk, which I think too many Catholics miss. (Drinking alcohol is not sinful, though, I'd like to make an article about that, but I am not sure how).
The point I'm getting it is this; who do you worship?
For you, is the Bible a bottle?
Do you place ideology, pop culture, drugs, or alcohol on a higher level than God?
Ultimately, sin is placing your will above God's will, so, it's a good thing to remember what he said about having others gods, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3)
