Denial of freewill is denial of reality
"Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am". (John 8:58)
Okay, so I've already written about Mormons and Muslims (but it was about a different topic). And so I was thinking about Jehovah's Witnesses. One thing that they will claim is that Jesus isn't God (apparently he's Michael the Archangel...or, something).
Now of course, there are some that will argue that's an interpolation (by the way, even if it was, that doesn't mean it was never said). But that's not the people we're dealing with. Also, check out how the JWs try to exegete this, (I have been)
(that is AWFUL, and NOT what it says,John 8:58 Jesus literally uses the title for himself God uses in Exodus 3:14, Exodus 3:14).
Especially bizarre that Jesus would be stoned for claiming to be pre-existent (some Jews believed in the soul's pre-existence, Pre-existence in Early Judaism)
So, even in the JW notes, they're trying to undermine the clear meaning of scripture.
Actually, if the JWs come to your door, do NOT let them use the New World Translation. Use another version of the Bible, a well known Bible (even a Protestant one, like the King James Version), should suffice. Ask them WHY this says something different in the NWT than virtually every Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox Bible. If they claim it's because Christians (or whatever they call us, now), are being intentionally deceitful, ask why Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox would all be part of this one conspiracy, yet can't settle doctrinal questions other than this one.
And at the end of the day, I think that's the name of the game. The Jehovah's Witnesses (or at least the organization), are conspiratorial. It's all about a persecution complex with them (read their literature). Now, there have been persecutions of JWs, and I fully agree that that's evil. (Jehovah's Witnesses, though, this article mistakes Jehovah's Witnesses as pacifists, this isn't quite accurate)
I think JWs have to have something to stand out. Okay though, so, why change the text of scripture?
And I also think we may need to read the previous verses,
"Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
So context is important, here.
When the JW comes to the door, read as MUCH of John 8 as you can, don't just use the few verses I gave you. And, by the way, you have my full permission to print this out and hand it use it to talk to them when they come to the door.
*All verses used are from the King James Version, though the New World Translation link is obviously not
