Holy Innocents and the Call to Protect the Unborn
In 1999, Brendan Frazer would be propelled into a household named when he starred in the anticipated of The Mummy. Frazer stars as a skilled marksman and military veteran of the French Foreign Legion who helps Evie and Jonathan find the tomb of an Egyptian priest named Imhotep in the city of the dead known as Hamunaptra. Imhotep was cursed after having an affair with the mistress of the Egyptian pharaoh.
They encounter rival treasure hunters and Magi who would soon come across more than what they were bargaining for. Upon discovering the priest, a curse was brought about the land, and it would devour the rival hunters while also using Evie to resurrect his long-lost love.
Now, after 25 years, the movie has stood the test of time. Sorry, not sorry for picking this over Tom Cruise’ flop that would be released years later becoming the worst movie to date in his career.
The remake of the 1932 classic brings about epic action scenes, good pace of development for characters, and excitement that mesmerized a millennial audience when it was released ahead of the 1999 summer box office season. It has horror and adventure mixed into one. Plus some comic relief from Jonathan.
Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan
The one thing that carried this highly regarded remake was the casting of two little to known stars. The two has so much to teach us about how man and woman can complement each other.
Frazer had some lead roles before landing one in the smash hit masterpiece. Likewise, Rachel Weisz is another star who was not well known. Yet, the two together complimented each other as they brought the Braun and the brain together to defeat the antagonist.
For O’Connell, he displayed manly chivalry by being by Evie’s side during the film. He is also shown as trained in military and has awareness of his surroundings. The traits needed for how to defeat the Mummy. He also becomes aware of who to trust and not to trust.
For Evie, she shows us true femininity in the film. Evie’s character displays wisdom and brains that helps keep Rick grounded. One scene is the argument scene which Rick was all about “me, me, me” while Evie challenges him to stop making everything about him.
Pace and Action
The pace of the movie was spot on. The movie brought three main unknowns together.
There is Rick who is this cocky soldier who survived a battle, gets out of a sticky situation, and accepts a chance to help the two siblings find the City of the Dead. Jonathan and Evie wanted it for different ambitions.
For Evie, as a scholar, she sought to discover the ancient for scientific reason. It shows that he wanted to grow in knowledge and understanding of the past.
For Jonathan, he wanted it his own personal gains. Jonathan was all about money and fortune. He would come to the realization that he can’t always get what he wants.
Ardeth, a member of a shadowy warrior group, has a mission to ensure the mummy is buried forever. He would soon lend a hand after the mummy is reborn in the intent to complete an ancient task.
Overall, it is a worthwhile movie. It helps mesmerize movie fans who love good pace, action, and even some humor.
