Laughter the Best Medicine
“If you know world history, you will be Catholic,” These words are from George Farmer to his wife Candace Owens, and they pack a punch. Candace, a popular political pundit, and educator to young adults across university campuses, recently became Catholic. In an interview with Taylor Marshal, George who converted to Catholicism in College said that he was not pushing his wife to the faith, that she was on her own journey of discovery. “Patience is the companion of Wisdom,” in the words of St. Augustine.
The world seems to know there is something evil going on and the wise ones are converting to the truth, ensconced in the Catholic Teachings. The famous Dr. Jordan Peterson’s, wife Tammy, also most recently came home. While men are fallible and certainly the church has seen much of that, the teachings of Christ, the ways of the Saints and Apostles are not. We have a road map toward a life that can be calm even in the face of adversity, those who study, sit in silence, and then seek out kindred spirits, find meaning and peace in their lives and upon death. What a comfort in a world filled with flashing trends sprawled across screens. Trends are “of the moment” while classics are indistinguishable by time.
Chesterton had already proved himself a champion of tradition against faddism, but he made it clear to his doubters and detractors that one of the main reasons for becoming Catholic was that Catholic Church “is the only thing that saves a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age.”
George’s words to his wife and others who ask, why is he Catholic press upon the listener to go and read. But its other dual message packed in such a small sentence also compliments the listener by implying that they are smart enough to find the truth if they only ask, and then they will understand.
