The Evangelical Disappointment
The official position of Catholicism is to uphold the sanctity of life from conception to death. Neither abortion or euthanasia, are ever to be considered. With that, in less than six months time, millions of Americans will flock to the polls to vote for our 47th president. A significant number of those persons identify as Christian…denominational…nondenominational…evangelical…Pentecostal…etc…yet their ballots will be cast for a man…a self-proclaimed Catholic…who has deliberately strived to incorporate the decimation of God’s Word into his agenda. That constitutes in part the massacre of the unborn up to, and including the point of birth.
When I left the Church in February 1995…for what I presumed would be a permanent departure…I began to identify as a nondenominational Christian. I attended various fellowships where I was registered as a member and although I was unable to acclimate myself with the periodic raucous atmosphere, I would be less than truthful if I implied that I did not enjoy the Bible-based teachings, most of which enabled me to mature in the things of God. The pulpits, however, were largely reticent on a number of moral-based issues, including the atrocity of abortion. The possibility of laws against such were condemned as many within the various congregations emphasized their refusal to condone what they referred to as the legislation of sin. Moreover I was told that the decision to eliminate a pregnancy was a personal preference. Initially said mindset was not problematic as I too embraced a pro-choice mentality. This grievous attitude may have continued if not for the piercing words of a certain televangelist. On a Sunday afternoon in 2005, I turned on Christian television only to hear this man state with somber clarity “those who knowingly vote for pro-abortion politicians, will have the blood of those unborn babies on their hands.” His words impacted the core of my very being whereupon I adjusted my stance to pro-life.
As time progressed, I was stunned, to say the least, when, in September 2011, the Lord directed me to return to His Church. I recognized His voice and therefore I promptly obeyed. Despite my presence at Mass, and soon thereafter full parish involvement, I continued to accompany my husband to one Christian fellowship followed by another, as I enjoyed the presentation of God’s Word. That definitively changed with the 2020 election. I understand that people are entitled to their own opinion. With that being said, it was my initial, and obviously naive thought, that these alleged sanctimonious individuals, who screamed the Name of the Lord at the top of their proverbial lungs as they incessantly quoted Scripture, would surely stand for Godliness in the voting booth…would they not? They did not and I found it impossible to fathom how the majority of people within those congregations, coupled with other similar convocations, were joyfully exuberant over an administration with a pronounced diabolical program. I ultimately concluded that their spiritual insight was superficial and limited to momentary emotion as well as their priority to seek the Savior for material gain. And from that juncture, I lost all respect for those within the Kingdom who consistently disparaged the prior president…a Prolife defender…yet have remained silent in the face of the multiple moral atrocities put forth by the current regime over the last three years. It’s that identical air of apathy which also caused the purported pious to exalt in joy at the election of a junior senator in Georgia who, though he bears the title of reverend, has repeatedly expressed his support for aborticide. In essence, my profound disgust over their exhilarated willingness to embrace evil, prompted my reluctance to ever return to an evangelical assemblage.
This is not to imply that those within the Church are faultless as we have a substantial number of occupants in our own pulpits, pews and cabinets, who seemingly call upon the Savior, yet they consciously endorse all that which is offensive to Him. When Roe vs Wade was overturned in June 2022, a member of my parish bemoaned that the Supreme Court lacked the right to impede the termination of one’s pregnancy which she regarded, not as the assassination of a baby but rather a healthcare option. Moreover, alongside of our current president, there is a third party candidate who, as he speaks of his Catholicism, also, and without hesitation, supports access to abortion. Nevertheless I readily admit that I’m particularly hard on the nondenominational/evangelical fellowships. Given their ofttimes tendency to tout their alleged Biblical superiority, particularly over Catholics, I find it difficult to accept their selective application of scripture. For example, the Word is replete with its condemnation of the murder of the innocent. In consideration of that, how can we say that we worship Him yet we repeatedly vote for those who advocate for the massacre of the awaited child into law? How are we able to base our decision for a candidate on one’s alleged ability to lead rather than their commitment to uphold the edicts of God? We assert that we have surrendered our lives to Jesus Christ yet we maintain the stance that infant homicide is a choice and the prohibition of such is wrong. I have personally heard those who, though they profess their love for the Lord, casually spout that this abomination is not the only sin. That indeed is true but the deliberate annihilation of the expected newborn is a travesty particularly when Revelation 21:8 specifically states in part that the fate of the murderer is the lake of eternal fire. According to Proverbs 6:16-19, amongst the seven things abominable to God are “hands that shed innocent blood.” We are warned in Leviticus 18:21 “you shall not offer any of your offspring for immolation to Molech, thus profaning the name of your God. I am the Lord.” In spite of the fact that in excess of 63 million lives have been eliminated in this manner since 1973, many within the Kingdom have elected to grasp the doctrine of Molech…the demonic idol of child sacrifice…irregardless of the dastardly eternal consequences.
Have we become so dispassionate that we easily condone moral atrocities under the guise of our unwillingness to be offensive? Are religious leaders fearful of decreased membership which in turn has prompted them to limit their sermons to that which placates the soul? Indeed, the Body of Christ, to our absolute detriment, has become both lukewarm and complacent. A significant number of those, who identify as His followers, have opted to ignore the fact that each of us must stand before the Lord and give an account of our lives. If, with full cognition, we have offended Him for the sake of our refusal to aggrieve those who deliberately decimate Biblical teachings, what justification can we possibly render before our omnipresent God? Do we truly believe that our non-confrontational attitude will cause the Savior to sympathize with our negligence? God is the giver of life and one such promise to mankind is contained in Isaiah 49:1 “Before birth the Lord called me, from my mother’s womb, He gave me my name.” It’s grievous to realize that so many within the Kingdom have chosen to disregard that passage as they instead uphold the barbaric right to slay the unborn. They refuse to accept responsibility for the perpetuation of this travesty as they are sated with pastoral messages that promise tangible goods but in essence abandon the spiritual being.
In November 2018, Andrew Cuomo won re-election as the New York State governor. As part of his platform, he vowed that he would approve late-term feticide. When he signed that bill into law in January 2019, he had a self-satisfied grin as did the other legislators who surrounded him. And as I gazed on that photo in dismay, the Lord spoke to me quite clearly as He stated “They will not be smiling when they stand before Me.” In 2022, a pro-abortion Supreme Court justice was sworn in and during an Easter service at a mega church here in New York City, the Senate majority leader spoke from the pulpit as he joyfully compared her confirmation to the Resurrection of Christ…”the stone has been rolled away!” There were no gasps in response to this heresy but rather ardent applause from the pastor and congregants. Six months later, a prominent televangelist urged his members to vote for a subsequently failed gubernatorial candidate who fervently advocated for the slaughter of the unborn as he proudly addressed her as “Governor.”
Although the unchurched tend to seek the proclaimed religious for spiritual direction, it’s difficult for Godly answers to be obtained since much of the Body of Christ abdicated all moral responsibility particularly as it pertains to the defense of the unborn. The justification for this abandonment fails to exist and as Jesus clarified in Matthew 7:21, not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
