Purgatory & The Pandemic
Immigration
Submitted by Thomas Stidl
Let me state at the very beginning that I am a son of a proud immigrant father who came to this country in 1920 as a nine year old child. His eleven-year old brother and their grandparents joined him. My father’s parents had already immigrated to this country before World War I. My father’s emigration happened in 1920. They came through Ellis Island. They were properly investigated and all became proud citizens of the country. These facts establish that I am not anti-immigrant. What I am totally against is the idea of mass migration. The strain of mass migration affects the entire nation. The costs are unfathomable. Mass migration places a great strain on our social welfare network and the logistics are a nightmare.
Anyone who wishes to enter this country or any country should follow the immigration law procedures that have been traditionally followed. The country and the affected areas must have the funds to insure the welfare and the safety of the immigrants and the citizens of this country. When it comes to the care given to people, the citizen should be first to receive the benefits. No citizen of the United States should ever need to live and sleep in the streets while an immigrant gets to live and sleep in a motel or hotel. No citizen should ever go hungry. As for the benefits all veterans should be first in line for assistance if they need such care. They served our nation in the armed forces and should get priority over immigrants. Catholic charities should also assist in this matter. The United States must take care of its own poor first.
Catholic charities should also be working in other countries to improve the lives of the poor in their home country. This will eliminate the need for mass migration. It will also put the corporal woks of mercy into action. Many years ago, Catholics supported the missions in various places. Now, we must let those missions unite with Catholic charities to care for the spiritual and physical needs of all people. The charities can create jobs for these people, lifting them from poverty to a productive life. Education is the key to learning new skills. These people will have two choices. They can remain in their country of origin with their families or they can immigrate to another country where their skills are needed. The only caveat is that all must obey the immigration laws set by each country. This is the main reason for borders and walls. This teaches respect for the sovereign rights of all nations. This will take the criminal element out of immigration protecting each citizen. It will also insure that monetary funds are available to care for all of God’s children.
Until next time, Laus Tibi, Christe. Deo Gratias. Gloria Tibi Domini. Praise be to God. See you in Paradise. Amen.
