Simplistic Paraphrasing of the Summa Theologica
If we look through Scripture, we find that Jesus selected a group of men. Then He organized them into a cohesive company of men to which He then gave a mission to accomplish.
What was that mission? Was it that they should write down all which He commanded and hand it out so that others could read it and learn for themselves what He taught?
Actually, we can even go one step back. If Jesus wanted people to learn from a book, why didn’t He simply write it and hand it out and have people read what He said without explaining it, face to face, as was His custom?
So, in answer to the question, “Where does Jesus teach Scripture alone?” The answer is, “He doesn’t.”
Parables
As we read the Gospels, we find something peculiar. Jesus spoke to the multitudes in hard to understand parables. Why?
I think the answer is easy to deduce. Jesus had joined together a group of men whom He was teaching privately. His Disciples. On every occasion, after He spoke to the multitudes in parables, He would turn around and explain these parables to His Disciples. The crowds would then go to His Disciples for more insight into that which Our Lord had taught them.
It seems obvious that Jesus wanted the crowds to rely upon His Disciples to understand that which He was teaching.
Moses
This goes back, all the way to Moses. Here is what God said to Moses in the cloud:
Exodus 19:8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord. 9 And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord. 10 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,
Notice that God doesn’t say, “Moses, go unto the people and hand them my Scriptures.” For one thing, there were no Scriptures yet written.
Mose’s seat
Exodus 18:13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening. 14 And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even? 15 And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:
Do the people go to the Scriptures to inquire about God? No, they go to Moses.
What does Jesus say?
Does Jesus say, “Don’t listen to the Pharisees. Pick up a Bible and figure it out for yourselves.”
No, Jesus says, “Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. (Matthew 23:1-3)
Bottomline
Jesus commanded His Church to teach all which He commanded. He said:
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Nowhere is it recorded that Jesus commanded the Church to write a book upon which His people would place their faith, exclusively. Nowhere is it recorded that Jesus taught Scripture alone.
