The Feast of the Ascension - A Homily
Friends,
For the last three weeks, we have celebrated the power and grandeur of our God in the great feasts of Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, and Corpus Christi. This week we return to ordinary time with a look at evil. In the readings, evil seems so much less impressive than the might of Goodness from these past weeks. In Genesis, evil is a snake that can be stepped on. In Mark, it is a house that can be divided and crumble. In Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, evil is the small, daily discouragements that dishearten and lead us astray.
The contrast seems about right. So much of the power of evil comes from the power we give it. And sin can be powerfully destructive. It also is so much less satisfying than it seems before we begin in its ways. Yet, we fall to temptation anyway and give away our strength.
Pope Benedict, in his writings, reminded us that the Cross is more powerful than all the evil that has ever existed or ever will. Rest in the power of God. Give away sin's burdens by seeking forgiveness and amending our wrongs. Now, that has the power to change our lives.
Be Well and God Bless,
Deacon Ed
