Why is Thanksgiving Important for Catholics?
What providential timing did the readings pick for the 10th Sunday of Ordinary Time? It reminds us that Christians have a common enemy… Satan. Satan exists so he can devour and destroy everything God made to be good and beautiful.
In the book of Genesis, the devil seduced Eve into eating the fruit from the forbidden tree. She eats and would soon bring sin into the world. In today’s gospel, Christ was attacked by Satan through biblical scholars, yet he resisted. What Satan tries to do, and it has been working in our culture is to use many tactics. Two in particular are deceit and utter confusion.
The problem is we have all the chances to stop him, yet we don’t do a thing about it. The devil has a hold on destroying two things that God has created… marriage and life.
Marriage is a bond between a man and a woman. Sadly, divorce rates are high because everyone comes up with their definition of marriage through fornication, cohabitation, or domestic partnership. It is also being hijacked by the demonic LGBTQ (What were the other letters? I don’t remember) as they use the vague catchphrase “Love is love” in the guise of perversion and lust.
Love was given to us by God, so we can love others by word, deed, and action. Love is not lust. Rather, it is a virtue that teaches us to will the good of others as St. Thomas Aquinas reminds us.
The other thing that God created that has been attacked over and over is the sanctity of human life. Abortion has been the scourge of the West since the last half of the 20th Century claiming more lives than the casualties of World War II. It has been the No.1 cause of death in the United States since the end of the last decade.
As someone who has been involved with the pro-life movement since my senior season of high school, I get sad deep within my heart when I see a pregnant mom who walks into a Planned Parenthood or any abortion facility like it’s no big deal. What is more disturbing is when the “boyfriend” or family member tells her to “fix the problem” like it wasn’t a big deal.
The devil loves abortion. He even doesn’t want men to have a say in it. Well, I wonder if that was only for those who opposed his demonic plan, or those who were scarred by lost fatherhood were included.
The good news is Satan will lose. Mary’s Immaculate Heart will triumph in the end. Fulton Sheen reminds us, “Evil will have its hour, but God will have his day.”
We stop Satan by rejecting him and his empty promises. Notice too that it is the first thing we profess with the Baptismal Promises when we are confirmed, coming into the church, or sponsoring an infant during Baptism. We do this by receiving the sacraments faithfully, going to confession, making frequent visits to the Blessed Sacraments, and praying.
Satan may have a hold and influence in our culture. His influence will end when Catholics rise up and say no to him.
Are you ready to recommit to your Baptismal Promises? Are you ready to beat Satan through your faithful witness?
The time is now to reclaim God in our culture and defend what was created and sacred by him.
