Think back to when spring began in March. After the bitter winter has offered with cold temperatures and snow, the first thing many anticipate is warmer weather and the blooming of many flowers and plants. Now, many of us are not pros at gardening. Yet, if we can comprehend some basic knowledge of gardening, we can understand how flowers and plants can grow. Two important things are needed, water and good soil. Without either of them, the garden would be withered into a wasteland.
In today’s gospel, Jesus uses two gardening metaphors, scattering seed and the mustard seed. The mustard seed was used to explain the Kingdom of God. The scattering seed was used to illustrate a prophetic message from Ezekial about a shoot from a cedar tree. Both Jesus and Ezekiel remind us that small things can grow into something large. How?
First off, St. Paul reminds us that we will be judged by our deeds on earth. In other words, what we do now will be called back when we meet our creator. In the movie Gladiator, the first line from Maximus before he and his legion were to fight the barbarians was, “What we do in life echoes through eternity.” One question to ponder is how we have brought about the kingdom of God.
Second, St. Paul tells us in his letter to walk by faith, not by sight. When we rely on our faith every day, it helps us to work wonders, face challenges, have the motivation to love, forgive, care, engage, offer assistance, thank, and live. Without faith, we are nothing.
In today’s society, faith is needed now more than ever. Thanks be to God that we have many saints to ask for help in our spiritual journey.
God is good to all of us. He is the author of life because he gave us life. He provides growth through the sacraments and prayers.
In the words of the psalmist, “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to your name, Most High. To proclaim your kindness at dawn and your faithfulness throughout the night.”
Let us strive to walk in the path of the lord. Let us plant good seeds that will help the Kingdom of God grow through our faithful witness. Let us give thanks to God who is the author of life.
