Are we as Catholics asked to Fear God?
When God Brings Us To Our Knees
Eileen Renders
God watches over us, and is aware of how we are living the life He has given us. When intervention is needed, God will often intercede and point us in the right direction. Sometimes in our lives, we feel that life is good, and is going exactly as we have planned it. We feel that we are strong, capable, and happy.
However, life is just a day at a time. At some point in our lives, we may encounter a great loss, rejection, illness, or financial distress. We find it difficult to understand this sudden turn of events, and we know not where to go for understanding and support. We may be facing more stress and vulnerability than we may have ever experienced before. Some will question themselves asking; “Why is this happening to me, and why now?”
This is a perfect time for God to intervene, and He often does this because we have not given God any time in our lives, we were feeling happy, in control, and followed our will in making choices in our lives. Yet our choices led us down a dead-end alley.
We had never thanked God with sincere gratitude for our health, or our happiness. We had gotten used to patting ourselves on the back, and believing that we were the perfect Captain of our ship.
The stresses and strife of life eventually visit each of us at one time or another, however often comes unexpectantly. Perhaps we find ourselves on our knees asking God for His help. We were not comfortable in doing this as it was a new experience for us. We had never been on our knees before asking God to help and lead us.
Could this be God’s doing? Is God reaching down to help teach us humility, and letting us realize that we do need Him? He may be helping us more than we realized during this period of stress. He is teaching and leading us that we do need our creator, and it is only He who can lead and guide us in a positive and meaningful way.
Although God gave us free will to make whatever choices in our lives, our free will is often our worst enemy. It can be influenced by Satan or our own selfish pride. As I like to remind myself occasionally; Life is terminal. God’s love and mercy are eternal! Using our will is not free because it can be associated with sinfulness. God wants us to submit our will to His will. That is the wisest choice we can ever make in our lives.
