Fundamentals of Lent and Suggestions
It is hard to believe that it has been two years since Roe v Wade was sent into the ash heap of history. As pro-lifers take time to reflect on the two-year mark, it can also serve for us to see what progress has been made and what more can be done.
First, let’s not forget that abortions are still happening in America. For half a century, 65 million lives have been lost. Now, with Dobbs, the abortion debate is going back to the states. Meanwhile, some states are upholding or have failed to secure abortion bans like Ohio, New York, Kentucky, and Kansas. In the fall, Florida could put Governor DeSantis’ efforts in limbo with a vote in November. Yet, bishops and churches are doing their part to protect life in the Sunshine State.
Since this landmark decision, 25,000 babies have been saved. 14 states have barred abortion. A dozen others have banned abortion to a degree. Planned Parenthood has collected $20 million in funding as they gear up for a pivotal election this fall.
President Biden continues his diabolic crusade to make abortion the law of the land, yet he seems too arrogant to come to the reality that abortion is dangerous and unthinkable. How can a Catholic in name only comprehend the fact that abortion is not healthcare or that it hurts women, and they deserve care and compassion from pregnancy centers and the church?
In the meantime, the abortion industry is shifting its tactics to the abortion pill. Prior to the anniversary of Dobbs, the Supreme Court tossed out a case challenging the abortion pills. Pro-lifers are looking to find ways to combat the abortion movement and how to stop the reckless endangerment of women.
Second, the Dobbs decision has brought about the beginning of the end of the scourge of abortion. What we are seeing is that abortion is falling. At the same time, it is also a call for pro-lifers to double their efforts to protect life at its most vulnerable stage of existence. The good news is that abortion facilities are closing and many of its workers want out. The momentum must continue.
During a Mass to kick out the annual Philly March for Life, a priest offered three words for pro-lifers to remember faith, freedom, and fight.
Faith has been a secret weapon for seasoned and callow pro-lifers alike. Those who have stepped into the fray since the beginning know that faith would be crucial in making abortion unthinkable. Whether it would be praying the rosary in the cold snow, blazing heat, and torrential downpours, never underestimate the power of prayer outside of abortion facilities. In his address to Allied Forces before D-Day, Eisenhower addressed the soldiers, sailors, and airmen on the eve of the longest day in history. He declares,” The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people every march with you.”
God does give us freedom. Sadly this freedom is hijacked by Satan as it traces back to the Garden of Eden. St. Augustine remarks, “God is the cause of every activity and we have freedom of choice. He does not mean that our actions are both determined and free.” In other words, our choices should reflect the way God wants them to be.
Philadelphia may have numerous nicknames. The one that stands out the most is not “Brotherly Love”. Rather, it is the cradle of liberty. The freedom that our founding fathers fought for permeates to a new generation of Americans. This new freedom that must be fought is for the lives of unborn Americans.
Fulton Sheen reminds us, “The refusal to take sides on great moral issues is a decision. It is a silent acquiescence to evil. The Tragedy of our time is that those who still believe in honesty lack fire and conviction, while those who believe in dishonesty are full of passionate conviction.”
Catholics are called to fight. There is no sideline. Every Catholic must step into the breach. Men are needed the most. Yes, they have been belittled by decades of feminism. Now, Catholic men can turn the tide in their favor. It starts when men rise to the occasion. If men were more vigilant in the por-life movement and accept the responsibilietes of manhood and the conduct of a gentleman, the world would change.
2024 is going to be a battleground year. As pro-lifers mobilize to gauge the pro-life voters, we should also prepare to double our efforts to help both women and babies. Let’s do our part to ensure the pro-life voice is voted into office. It will be an uphill battle, but with God on our side, he will bring about victory.
