Pictures of Me by Marilee Haynes

Review:

Pictures of Me is another amazing middle-grade book by Marilee Haynes. This author really has a knack for writing about those tumultuous middle-school years. The characters in Haynes’ books are so relatable as they face struggles with their friendships and all those awkward moments that seem so prevalent as young people move from being a child to becoming a teenager.

Annie is nearing the end of her 5th grade year at her Catholic school. However, before moving on to 6th grade, she must face her fears and stand in front of her class to share a presentation about herself. Despite her love of words, Annie feels utterly unprepared to complete this last assignment. Add to the mix Annie’s new, unexpected feelings for a boy, the horrible treatment from the so-called popular girls, and trouble with her BFF, and you’ve got an entertaining book that everyone can relate to.

Summary:

Eleven-year-old Annie must complete a self portrait for the end-of-year project--and present it to the class. Annie's fear of public speaking isn't her only problem. Two of the girls in class seem to enjoy making life miserable for everyone; Taylor, her best friend, is having trouble at home; and Lacey, the new girl, can be nice but Annie can't quite figure her out. With forty-eight days until the end of the school year and the looming project, Annie and friends have to grow and be willing to face who they are--and who they want to be.
