Convincing Doubters: 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time
It has been a week since nearly 60,000 Catholics gathered in Indianapolis for the National Eucharistic Congress. For many, it provided countless memories and encounters with those who were on the same journey as them. Collectively, everyone was reminded that it must continue everywhere they go.
Now, I didn’t attend this once-in-a-lifetime event, which I wish I did. Yet, I can gather enough stories from friends and siblings in Christ to understand what it was they received from the weeklong observation that rivaled the Republican National Convention.
Whether one was at the event or not, seven quotes can be takeaways to keep this revival going and how Christ can be shared with every person, whether they’re Catholic or not.
“The Eucharist for me is healing. The Eucharist for me is peace. The Eucharist for me is my grounding. The Eucharist for me is his heart within me.” — Jonathan Roumie
This quote from the star of The Chosen series speaks to many. He sees the Eucharist as our guide to get us through many challenges of life. He even offered to do the full Eucharist discourse during his address at the event.
“You can never have a revival without repentance.” — Father Mike Schmitz
Fr. Mike’s one-liner is not further from the truth. A revival can never happen unless we have humble and contrite hearts.
It’s also disheartening to see many people becoming timid about seeking God’s forgiveness, yet they are quick to receive Jesus without being in a state of grace. Clean your mortal souls first. Then, receive Jesus, people.
“We have him and nobody can take him away from us.” — Mother Olga of the Sacred Heart
Jesus is always present. He outlived the countless flawed men and women who have played God in the history of the world. He triumphs over evil. He will never be taken from us. He is with us always.
“Knowledge can make one great; but only love can make you a saint.” — Father Mike Schmitz
Fr. Mike reminds us of the important part of striving for sainthood and that is to imitate him. Christ loved the enemy, sinner, and friend alike.
“We need a new Pentecost. We need to be filled with boldness. We need to be filled with intrepidity. We need to be filled with love, with generosity to be able to sacrifice everything for the sake of the kingdom.”
Mother Adela Galindo tells us that the church needs a church to be renewed like it was in the 1st Century. The best way that it can be accomplished is by having love in our hearts and conviction while on fire with the Holy Spirit.
“The love of God has been poured into our hearts and it’s the kindness of God that leads us to life-giving repentance.” — Sister Bethany Madonna
Since his death on the cross, the love of Christ has manifested into every person. Every Catholic is tasked to pour out that same love everywhere. It begins when we constantly repent of our sins.
“Your Christianity is not for you. Christianity is not a self-help program, something designed just to make us feel better ourselves. Your Christianity is for the world.” — Bishop Robert Barron
Bishop Barron reminds us that Christianity is meant to be proclaimed. It is not something that must be kept private. If every Catholic did not cower with the world and become bold in what they believe, the world would change, Satan would lose his grip on the world, and all of the world’s problems would be solved when we all turn to God.
Let us take part in the sharing of Christ with others. Regardless of where you were during the congress, every Catholic is called to be a faithful witness to Christ. His love must be shared with every person.
The Catholic Church needs a revival. The events that have unfolded in the last few weeks were just the beginning. It is our job to carry on the baton of faith.
