Do you feel like Advent is slipping away from you?
My heart breaks when I see events on the news become about racism and discrimination. When an officer-involved shooting is promoted as white versus black it is sad for our country. There is a constant stream of news referencing individuals based on race, country of origin, or religious affiliation. The discrimination and hatred aimed at certain groups and races is not that of the Holy Spirit and it has no place in Christianity.
St. Paul teaches us clearly, in many of his letters, that discrimination and racism has no place in Christianity. It has no place in a Christian’s life. The Gospel of Jesus is meant for everyone. It is not reserved for a certain group of people.
“To Greeks and non-Greeks alike, to the wise and the ignorant, I am under obligation: that is why I am eager to preach the gospel also to you in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: for Jew first, and then Greek.” (Romans 1:14-16)
We have the Gospel of Jesus in our life because the apostles did not discriminate. They shared Jesus with anyone and everyone that would listen. They went to the poor, the uneducated, but they also went to those in power and those highly educated.
Let us not forget the incredible truth behind the sacrifice and crucifixion of Jesus.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him night not perish but might have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
God “loved the world”. He still does. His loved extends to everyone. It does not matter if you are white, black, poor, rich, or a celebrity. The same grace and forgiveness that flows from the cross of Calvary for you is the same that flows for your neighbor, friend, family, co-worker, and the stranger on the street. It’s the same that is offered to those in the highest penthouses of New York to the homeless sleeping under the bridge.
If we are to truly be children of God and share Jesus with others, then we must remember that we are to share it with everyone. Racism has no place in Christianity or in a Christian’s life. Discrimination has no place in Christianity.
