Knights of Columbus Release Powerful Documentary of Joseph Reali
Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 film Rear Window was released 70 years ago. The movie tells the story of Jeff, recovering from a leg injury, confined in his apartment. While recovering, he picks up a mundane pastime of watching what his neighbors are doing in the apartment across from him. This captivating thriller has three lessons of faith that it can teach us.
The Window to the World
Jeff was recovering from a leg injury. He can only see what is in front of him. St. Paul tells us, “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” 1 Corinthians 13:12. Our understanding of God and his plans can sometimes be limited. He calls us to trust in his great scheme for our lives. When we trust in him, we can be at peace.
Sensational Storylines and Hidden Depths
Jeff witnesses the life of their neighbors like falling in love, getting married, or composing music. What Jeff fails to see is what is beneath the surface. Jesus reminds us in the Gospel of John, “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” John 7:24. There will be times when we will misjudge someone. We would have to ask how we can be more graceful and understanding.
Taking Action from Observation
St. James reminds us, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” What sets Catholics apart from Protestants is how they put their faith into action.
Jeff saw a murder that took place in his apartment, and he knew that something had to be done. He teaches us that our words, prayers, and acts of charity will ripple into the world. He acted with courage and compassion.
Rear Window is a timeless classic that reminds us of the importance of putting our faith into action, being courageous in taking a stand, and never waiving from finding clarity and purpose in our lives.
