Life as an autistic Catholic
If you have not read "part I" of this article, I advise you to read it, here; Finding God in Pop Culture Part I: Secular music.
I want to get away from talking about the western vatnik problem and a misunderstanding of how the UOC-MP operates (something I suspect Pope Francis is guilty of, Dear Pope Francis, what about Russian persecution of Eastern Catholics?, Why banning the UOC-MP makes sense, Russia's religious persecution of Catholics (especially Eastern Catholics), and the false piety of the Russian Orthodox church.
No, I want to talk about the band Creed. The band everyone pretends to hate.
Now, let's get this out of the way. Creed isn't a Christian band.
Creed is a band with Christian lyrics, themes, and sometimes music.
And this is was the main reason for the vitriol towards Creed. Apparently, secular music isn't supposed to use biblical themes. Except when it does.
It should be noted that Creed was popular with fans of Hard Rock during the era of their first album (My Own Prison).
The album is one that even Creed bashers will admit is a great album (because it is).
Let me give you some of the lyrics from that album, so you can see why I love it; " I feel angry, I feel helpless
Want to change the world, yeah
I feel violent, I feel alone"
I promise, I will never write a rock song with the word "yeah". (It's probably easier to name rock songs without the word "yeah").
So, because Creed's biblical themes, I don't think it would be unfair to call them Christian rock. (Though, using the Lord's name in vain several times in "What's this life for"? Would probably count as a strike against that).
But, think about the lyrics to the song we've been discussing.
"The goal is to be unified
Take my hand, be my brother"
That is a VERY Christian message. "There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all". (Ephesians 4:4-6)
"The world is heading for mutiny
When all we want is unity
We may rise and fall
But in the end we meet our fate together"
There are so many people that make everything about race (which is actually what the song is criticizing), but in Christ, we are all equal.
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ".
And, as it says in one of the comments;
"God is the one".
