Words of Life for Cutting Words: A Catholic Response to Teens on Social Media Writing Sites, Part I
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105
The ancient world was a lot darker than it is today — literally. Lamps were dim flickers of flame against the black of night. Though we have more physical light today, we are hardly more enlightened than the ancients were. Each of us walks the journey of faith one step at a time. We need the light of Christ to shine upon the way and guide our steps. If we stray from the path, we plunge ourselves into darkness. The Bible offers us that light of truth, leading us on the road of salvation.
As Catholic men, are we truly shining as beacons of light in the world? Do we bring God’s word to bear on the darkness of sin and the lies our culture tells? Are we walking the narrow path toward heaven and leading others in the same way? Only as we immerse ourselves in the word and allow it to guide us can we be light to others. We need to be students of the Bible, guided by the Church and her teachings, if we are to bring the light of Christ into our darkened world. God’s word is our light and our guide. Strive to be a man who carries this light to others every day!
Questions for Reflection
When in your past have you chosen to ignore God’s light and fallen into darkness?
How have you been a light to others in sharing the truths of God’s word?
Are you seeking the wisdom of the Church to guide your understanding of the Bible?
Praying with Scripture
The unfolding of your words gives light;
it imparts understanding to the simple. (Ps 119:130).
