Heal the World
Listen, That You May Have Life

A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:
Jesus called out to the crowd, "Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear" (Luke 8:8).
At the center of the parable of the sower is the Word of God, which is represented by the seed. The different grades of soil represent the condition our hearts are in when God's Word reaches our ears. Jesus tells us that hearing His Word is good, but embracing it with a good and generous heart is better, because it brings about the growth we need to bear fruit.
How can we increase our soil so God's Word won't be taken from us every time we're tempted or fearful? Perseverance, Jesus tells us, is the enrichment we need to yield fruit "a hundredfold."
On the day He delivered His parable, "A large crowd gathered, with people from one town after another journeying to Jesus" (Luke 8:4). If we try and visualize the sheer size of the crowd, we can actually see what it means to bear fruit a hundredfold!
Today we're still harvesting the abundance of fruit Jesus planted, which continues to brim over from the pages of St. Luke's Gospels onto us. But in order to bear fruit ourselves, it's essential that we hear it, believe it, and hold on to it.
