To the Ends of the Earth: Character – Catholic Men’s Devotionals, Week 6 – The Grain of Wheat
Your mercy, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God, your judgments are like the great deep;
man and beast you save, O LORD.
How precious is your mercy, O God!
The children of men take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house,
and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
Psalm 36:5–8
Men who try to handle life by their own strength will always end up broken and alone. Men who accept the mercy and grace of God find a superabundant source of strength that sustains them in all their trials. This is the key to becoming true warrior poets: we must recognize this fountain of abundant power and draw in the Living Water of God. Only then can we overflow with love for the world. God has called us to drink freely from his steady stream of life. His light and love empower us to live our lives to the full.
Without God’s mercy, we would all be doomed to hell. But thanks be to God, he wanted us to be saved. In Christ, we have the promise of salvation. God provides us with a feast from his rich table of blessings. We are satisfied by Christ’s food and drink, his Body and Blood, which strengthen us to witness to the world through acts of love. We know that our faith is our strength. Only through it can we stand strong and minister to the world so desperate for the Gospel.
Questions for Reflection
What is one time in your life when you relied solely on your own strength to get you through a particular trial? What was the result?
How do you seek out God’s strength in your life? What are one or two concrete ways you can turn to him now and invite him to be the source of all your strength?
How can you share the heavenly source of your strength with a hurting soul today?
Praying with Scripture
The LORD is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts;
so I am helped, and my heart exults,
and with my song I give thanks to him. (Ps 28:7)
