Father Benito Vines, a Jesuit priest, gave the world the first hurricane warning system.
Born in Spain, Father Vines was sent to Cuba in 1870 to lead the meteorological observatory at El Colegio Belen. As he studied the sky, he began to worry about residents of Cuba who lived in the constant fear of storms. When he learned to recognize cloud patterns, Father Vines shared his observations with his congregation and all who would take his weather advice. He became one of the first newspaper weather reporters.
On September 12, 1875, Father Vines' observations led him to believe that a hurricane would strike Cuba. His warning gave residents time to prepare their homes and flee the direct path of the storm. Many lives were saved due to his warning.
Throughout his life, Father Benito Vines studied weather patterns and gave advice that helped his congregation understand the ways of nature. His most well-known work, Practical Suggestions Regarding Hurricanes, was published in 1877.
Father Benito Vines is one of the many Catholic leaders who led their congregation spiritually as well as with their scientific knowledge.
