To the Ends of the Earth: Character – Week 10, Day 3 – We Cannot Hide from God's Mercy
The LORD builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:2–3
The God who destroys armies and conquers kingdoms will rebuild our shattered souls and gather us back together as one people. He will heal wounds of division and bind up our broken hearts. The One who numbers the stars is the One who stoops down low through the cross to sooth our weary souls. His preference is for the poor. He lifts them out of the pit, but he casts down those who oppress the helpless and the weak.
God’s comfort comes from his perfect love. Jesus was not a mighty king, rallying armies to defeat the oppressors of God’s people. He was the One who placed his hands on the lepers, touched the blind and the lame, and washed the dirty feet of his disciples. His perfect love took the form of compassionate service and eternal patience. He continues to shower that gracious gift upon all who seek his comfort. As we are loved by this perfect lover of souls, we can find the strength to comfort others who are lost, alone, and desperate for love.
Questions for Reflection
How have you experienced the comfort of God in your life?
How has Christ’s servant heart helped you to be a comfort to others?
Is there anyone outside your circle of faith who needs to experience the comfort of Christ? How can you bring that comfort to the person this week?
Praying with Scripture
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases,
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness. (Lam 3:22–23)
