LOSS: GRIEF AND HARD TIMES
Knocking at God’s Door
By MARY OLIVIA PATIÑO
How often have we heard the words, “Trick or Treat!” on the last day of October?
I recall times in the past, when these words were accompanied by children’s laughter. Peeking through my window before opening the door, I’d see beautiful princesses, knights in shining armor (glowing by the porch lantern), green dragons, orange pumpkins, cute ballerinas, and fierce monsters waiting, wondering what treats they’d receive. Giggling, some would glance once more into their 'trick or treat' bags.
It was not always easy to recognize who was who behind make-up, costumes, or masks. But, one thing was certain: they were out on a dark evening, enjoying themselves, hoping to get lots of candy!
Usually, a few days before, I’d get to the grocery store, buy a variety of assorted, individually-wrapped chocolates, and sweet tarts, plus whatever caught my fancy. I’d wonder, too, if I’d have enough, and if they would appreciate the treats I had chosen. On that special night for children, and yes, even for adults, after peeking out to see and count how many were rushing to the door, I would be glad to open the door and give out the wrapped goodies.
However, on this eve, I still need to get ready for the big night. Other happenings, like family and friends who are in need, have my attention.
This year, a little older too, I wonder how, as Christians, we prepare for another day in our lives of faith? Do we enjoy life? Are we grateful for our blessings? Are we kind to others? Are we at peace by the way we live?
More importantly, how do I prepare myself to receive Christ? Will he recognize me when He hears me calling? Do I recognize His voice when He knocks at my door? He calls every day. He is ready with His graces. They are truly sweet, sweeter than any of my favorite candy!
I pray: “Guide me, Lord, to be a better person each day. May you recognize me always by the way I live.”
He answered them, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough." -Luke 13:23-24
