The Music of Christmas: Heaven Meets Earth in Holy Sign
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.
2 Corinthians 1:3–5
Jesus experienced all our hurts and temptations in order to atone for our sins. His victory over his testing is the comfort he now offers to us. As Scripture tells us: “Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted” (Heb 2:17–18).
The love of Christ, which manifested itself through the ultimate test of suffering, now overflows into our lives to comfort us and carry us through our affliction to the realms of mercy. As a result, now we are able to offer that same comfort to others through our triumphs over the trials in our lives.
Questions for Reflection
Have you ever experienced the comfort of Christ by meditating on his sufferings? What was that like?
How has Jesus encouraged you as you have worked through your trials?
What encouragement can you offer today to a brother who is going through his own trial?
Praying with Scripture
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as you teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, and as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (Col 3:16)
