Avoid verse slinging
I got a little behind from taking care of kids and getting caught up in the aftermath of the American election (I literally did not know the results until 4 am). But, I had been thinking of this topic for a while.
Anyway, be sure to check out Coffee and Christianity: Episode 62: Husbands, love your wives!
Brazil, for those not in the know is both the largest country in South American and Latin America, by both population and land area.
While it’s not near the size of the United States or Canada, it is huge.
It is also one of the most Catholic countries on earth. Or, at least, was.
Now, South Carolina, we have quite a few Portuguese speakers. Both from Brazil and Portugal. But mostly Brazil. And I’ve found a noticeable lack of Portuguese Catholic apologetics.
Plenty of Spanish (which is great), but almost no Portuguese.
How, exactly can we keep Brazil Catholic, if no one is willing to even acknowledge there’s a problem?
I did find one Brazilian apologetics websites with resources in Portuguese. However, it was a rad trad site.
This is exactly the type of think that we DON’T need.
Many of the Brazilians leaving the Church, don’t become atheists or agnostics (there’s a misunderstanding amongst pollsters with the term “Non-religious”, they seem to think it means “atheist”, at least in the United States. However, most of those same “Non-religious” people believe in God.
Not helping, is the form of Protestantism that seems to be taking over Brazil is Pentecostalism. I think, because these people crave the charismatic movement, that it would be useful to re-evangelize Brazil using the Charismatic movement in the Catholic Church. (And, for the record, I am not one of those people that supports some of the more extreme views of the charismatic movement; Orderly worship)
Maybe some of the older people who claimed that the Charismatic movement in the Catholic Church become Protestant, need to eat their own words. Given, that, at least from what I’ve seen anecdotally, the Charismatic movement is what is bringing Catholicism to the continent to Africa.
A LOT of people have come into the Church via the Charismatic movement.
Karl Keating (whom I otherwise respect), made the absurd claim in the otherwise excellent “Catholicism and Fundamentalism”, that Charismatic Catholics become Protestant. I’ve seen the exact opposite.
He also provided no evidence for his claim, not even anecdotal. (I have the book, but I don’t feel like burying out it to show where he said it, it’s on Formed, if you want to check it out; Catholicism & Fundamentalism: The Attack on Romanism by Bible Christians by Karl Keating)
So, when these people have a need the Church can meet, why are we not meeting it?
I know people complain about the Church authorities going all in on a political issue, even if there’s no real Church teaching on it (What Does the Church Say About Gun Control?)
But why does it seem that so many bishops are indifferent on matters of the soul?
If people knew why they needed the sacraments, if they knew the Bible taught the sacraments, they’d not only stay Catholic, but they’d never want to be anything else.
And for the love of GOD, please make apologetics available in Portuguese.
I'll get you started, here's some very important Bible verses in Portuguese. If you speak Portuguese, and you want to bring people back to the Church, PLEASE remember them.
