The Scars of Aimee Haynes Now Available
I remember watching a high school basketball game once. The team was playing for the Catholic League Championship. It was a back-and-forth contest that went into overtime. Both teams fought hard in the uphill contest. In the game's waning minutes, one school scored a three-pointer that put the other team on time management. With time about to expire, the other team’s top scorer, who was playing his final year of high school basketball, would exchange his field goal shot that would help the school win the Catholic League Championship. The final score was 46-45. During this thrilling win, players on both sides laid it out on the court. They gave everything they had to win the championship.
This Sunday’s gospel tells the story of a poor woman who had only two coins. Everyone around town was willing to give some of their wealth for a collection. When the poor woman contributed her two coins, Jesus rejoiced in her act of almsgiving. Jesus acknowledged her faith because she placed her trust.
What the passage tells us is that Jesus wants us to give him what we have. That is all that he wants. He wants us to not only give him our treasure and time but to our neighbors.
With 2024 coming to an end, we may know someone who is struggling and could use our help. It can be helping getting to appointments, going to get groceries, or just someone to visit them if they’re imprisoned. Whatever the case, God wants us to make time that we have for others.
Give God All You Got. He just wants us to trust in him.
