The different prayers of St. Joseph
Thanksgiving is around the corner. It is no doubt on everyone’s mind, and it is affecting one’s productivity at school or work.
We’ve long anticipated this day when we can enjoy food, football, and time with family. While some will learn that the Puritans were the first to celebrate this holiday brought forth by George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, respectively, Thanksgiving has its roots in the Catholic Church.
The Greek word for Thanksgiving is “Eucharista” and we get the Eucharist from this word. Is it all Greek to you?
The first Thanksgiving was in Jerusalem, the night before Jesus gave his life for us to be free. This moment in salvation history is repeated at every Mass every time the priest recites the same words Jesus said to the twelve gathered in the room with him.
Challenge for all Catholics
While Thanksgiving is not a Holy Day of Obligation, Catholics can seize the moment. This is an invitation for all Catholics to attend Mass before the Thanksgiving parade and offer it for all God has bestowed upon us.
Every Mass is a chance to celebrate Thanksgiving with our siblings in Christ and the church. We see everyone in the Eucharist when we take part in the sacred mystery.
Jesus gave us his body and blood freely. We are asked to do it in remembrance of him. Remember Jesus, who sacrificed his life for us to free us from sin.
Catholics, on Thanksgiving and every Mass, I will see you in the Eucharist.
