Overcoming Mindset Challenges with St. Teresa of Jesus
“I live now, not I, but Christ liveth in me.” (Galatians 2:20)
For many Catholic women, the journey of wellness is not just about achieving physical fitness or better health—it’s about becoming a more faithful reflection of Christ. Galatians 2:20 offers us a profound roadmap: when Christ lives in us, our lives are transformed. This verse is not just a spiritual mantra; it’s an invitation to align every part of our lives—body, mind, and soul—with the love and power of Jesus.
A Life Surrendered
At the heart of this verse is surrender. St. Paul reminds us that when we truly embrace Christ, we no longer live for ourselves. Our choices, our actions, even our struggles, take on a new meaning as they are united with His divine purpose.
But how does this surrender play out in a wellness journey? It starts with recognizing that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Caring for our health isn’t about vanity or perfection; it’s about stewardship—honoring God by caring for the gift of our physical selves.
Body: Honoring the Temple
When Christ lives in us, our approach to health shifts. Wellness becomes less about numbers on a scale and more about strength for service and energy for prayer. Here are some Christ-centered ways to care for your body:
- Move with Purpose– Exercise is a way to celebrate what your body can do, not punish it. Offer your workouts as a prayer, asking God to strengthen you for His work.
- Nourish with Intention– View meals as opportunities to honor God by fueling your body well. Consider praying before meals, not just out of gratitude, but as a reminder to invite Christ into your choices.
- Rest in Him – Just as Jesus rested, we too must honor the rhythms of our bodies. Sleep, Sabbath, and moments of stillness are holy acts.
Mind: Renewed by Christ
“Be transformed by the renewal of your mind”(Romans 12:2).
A wellness journey toward holiness involves the mind as much as the body. How often do we fill our thoughts with negativity, comparison, or worry? Letting Christ live in us means surrendering those thoughts and allowing His truth to take their place.
- Guard Your Thoughts – Use Scripture or holy affirmations to combat negative self-talk. When you’re tempted to criticize yourself, remember: you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
- Learn with Love – Study your faith as part of your wellness. Read spiritual books, listen to Catholic podcasts, or join a Bible study group to fill your mind with things that uplift and encourage.
- Practice Gratitude – Each day, write down three things you’re thankful for. Gratitude opens your heart to see God’s blessings in every aspect of your life.
Soul: Christ at the Center
Holiness is the ultimate goal of any wellness journey. When we allow Christ to live in us, every moment becomes an opportunity for sanctification.
- Daily Prayer– Begin and end your day with prayer. Offer your wellness goals to Christ, asking for His guidance and grace.
- Sacramental Grace – Make frequent use of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation. These give us the strength and renewal needed for both physical and spiritual growth.
- Acts of Service – True wellness is not just about self-care but also about caring for others. Find ways to serve those in need, offering your time and energy for the glory of God.
Living “Not I, But Christ”
The beauty of Galatians 2:20 is that it frees us from the pressure to be perfect. Our wellness journey doesn’t depend solely on our willpower or determination—it depends on Christ. When we fall, His mercy picks us up. When we succeed, His grace keeps us humble.
As Catholic women pursuing wellness, let’s remember that our goal is not just a healthier body but a holier heart. By letting Christ live in us, we can transform even the smallest acts—like a workout, a meal, or a quiet prayer—into steps on the path to heaven.
Let us say with St. Paul, “I live now, not I, but Christ liveth in me,” and let every moment of our journey reflect the glory of His presence.
