Finding Merciful Love in Your Wellness Journey: A Catholic Mom's Perspective
In today’s world, identity is often a matter of self-definition. Popular culture tells us we can be whoever or whatever we want, untethered from truth or tradition. "You do you" has become a rallying cry, with personal feelings elevated to the level of ultimate authority. While freedom is a gift, this worldview often leaves people wandering, disconnected from the foundation that gives life meaning and direction.
As Catholics, we know our identity is not something we create but something we receive. Our true identity is rooted in Christ. It’s not about “anything goes” but about becoming who God created us to be.
The Problem with “Anything Goes”
When identity is based solely on personal choice or shifting cultural trends, the result is often confusion and emptiness. We see it in the growing rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. People are seeking meaning in temporary, superficial things—appearance, achievements, or social approval—and finding them hollow.
But Scripture reminds us of a deeper truth:
“You are not your own; you were bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
We are not left to drift in a sea of subjective self-definition. We belong to Christ, and in Him, we find who we truly are.
Who Does God Say You Are?
Defining yourself in Christ means embracing the identity God has given you:
Beloved Child of God – Through baptism, you are adopted into God’s family. No matter your struggles or past mistakes, you are loved unconditionally.
A New Creation – In Christ, the old is gone, and the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). You are not defined by your failures but by God’s grace.
Called to Holiness – Your life has a purpose: to know, love, and serve God. This call to holiness is the key to lasting joy.
How Do We Live This Out?
Living as a follower of Christ in a culture of “anything goes” is not easy. It requires courage, intentionality, and reliance on God’s grace. Here are some practical steps:
Know Your Faith – Study Scripture and Church teaching to deepen your understanding of who Christ is and who you are in Him.
Anchor Your Day in Prayer – Daily prayer helps you stay grounded in God’s truth, even when the world tries to pull you in other directions.
Surround Yourself with Community – Find others who share your desire to follow Christ. A supportive Catholic community can encourage you to live authentically.
Be a Witness – Share your faith through your words and actions. Show others that true freedom and joy come from living in God’s love.
Why Christ Matters
When we define ourselves by Christ, we are no longer slaves to the world’s expectations. We find the peace and purpose we were created for. Jesus Himself says:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
In Him, we are free—not to be whoever we want, but to become who we are meant to be.
So, in an age of “anything goes,” let’s stand firm in defining ourselves by Christ. Let’s let His love and truth shape our lives, knowing that in Him, we find our true identity.
