Broken Jewels
What makes a man run
toward a home engulfed in flames,
when he knows no one inside,
is not a firefighter, and
has no protective gear?
Vulnerable, yet
he acts without hesitation,
helping the panicked family
scale a wall,
or charging inside again
and again,
carrying out child after
child.
He must have
a heart on fire,
burning stronger and wilder
than flames,
turning fear of sacrifice
to ashes,
extinguishing
Self.
Has anyone noticed?
Our world is ablaze.
It is too much for
one person alone.
Our lives rest
in each other’s hands.
Will we set our hearts on fire?
