His mystical writings a hit

Though hard to read if you truly don’t get it

He became a Carmelite

And stayed as the order began to disintegrate

Jailed because of his ties to the order he began to write prose

Of all kinds even odes

His writings his mental acuity

In the form of mental prayer sometimes seem a mystery

From a jail cell barely larger than he

By an oil lamp and prayer book did he write his poetry

The depth of his writings profound

Many a reader does it confound

Saint John of the Cross

A member of the order known as The Carmelites
