Then They Will Fast
God first knew me as foretold by the Prophet Jeremiah as I formed in my mother’s womb. I always thought writing a reflection on my birthday would be easy, but it’s not. I reflect on the previous year and see my accomplishments since my last birthday. This birthday is different.
I reached the age of 35 and halfway through my 30s. According to the US Constitution, at that age, I am considered old enough to occupy the White House. I have even reached the halfway point of 70, which is the average life expectancy. Then, it may have gotten higher. (Yikes, I don’t want to think about gray hair, old age, and getting frail and weak.)
While I can reflect on what was accomplished last year, it also gives me a chance to look back on what has been achieved and thank God for letting me live to see 35 years.
Maintaining my Catholic faith
I feel like a small duck in a big pond when I reflect on my first accomplishment in life. I was born Catholic on March 11th, 1990 (the birthday of my paternal grandfather). I was raised Catholic. I intend to continue acting like a Catholic until I die.
I want to thank so many priests and religious who have helped me stay grounded in my faith. Some orders include the Sisters of Mercy, Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Sisters of Life, the Congregation of the Oratory, The Jedi (Franciscans), the Dominicans, and many other priests.
Became a Knight of Columbus
Since 2008, I have been a member of the Knights of Columbus. It was an opportunity for me to grow in my faith as a “Catholic gentleman.” Through my dad’s example, he planted the seeds when I attended Knights of Columbus events in which members would bring their families.
Most notably the annual Christmas party when everyone brought a wrapped toy for less fortunate children. Like him, I held many positions within the knight’s assembly and council and worked my way up to leadership roles.
Graduating High School and College
It has been 15 years since I graduated from high school. My four years saw me flourishing to achieve or exceed my potential. I had good teachers that have helped me. It was challenging, but they wanted what was best for me. 2025 will mark ten years since I obtained a bachelor’s degree. I managed to maintain my faith during these challenging times. When I look back, I am thankful for the young adults that I have met over the years. They have been the reason that I continue to live out my Catholic faith.
College was the most challenging time of my life. I obtained an associate’s before finishing off my bachelor’s in two years.
Being loved
Sometimes, I never understand God’s love for me unless he sends people to understand it. I have seen it firsthand from family, friends, and even my soon-to-be wife, Hanna.
Being a Writer
I have been contributing more than 400 articles for Catholics 365 and counting. I owe it to my friend and colleague Anne DeSantis, who has encouraged me to take part in this. I even published my debut novel through Amazon, which can make a great stocking stuffer if you need a last-minute gift for book lovers on one’s list.
Yes, I’ve accomplished so much. Yet, I have much to do while I live on this earth. I am thankful and humbled to reach the age of 35. At the same time, I must continue to as St. Francis De Sales reminds us to be who I am and be it well. I have thought of myself as George Bailey at times when things don't go my way. Then, I am reminded that I have friends that have gotten me through much of the journey.
Here’s to another 35 years. Happy Birthday to me!
