The Incarnation and the Exultation: An Advent Devotional - Monday, First Week of Advent
Ascribe power to God,
whose majesty is over Israel,
and his power is in the skies.
Awesome is God in his sanctuary,
the God of Israel,
he gives power and strength to his people.
Blessed be God!
Psalm 68:34–35
Though God speaks in whispers, his gentle word is full of great power. When we experience an answer to prayer, we find the strength to move forward in our journey of faith. God longs to answer our needs, and his answer, even when it is not what we thought we wanted to hear, gives us the power to accomplish his will and to live as his children.
Our response to God’s still small voice should be one of thanksgiving, wonder, and awe. We often take for granted that we are children of an all-loving, all-powerful Father who not only chooses to answer our needs, but really desires to do so. His blessings are always for our good. His love is all we need. As we experience the awesomeness of God in his works, we should, like Elijah, fall to our knees and surrender ourselves to his calling in our lives.
Questions for Reflection
How have you experienced the strength of God in your life? Have you always experienced his strength in this way?
How would you describe the truth that God is so beyond us and yet so near to our hearts?
What has surrendering to the still small voice of God taught you about serving him?
Praying with Scripture
He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength. (Is 40:29)
