Passion of the Christ at 20
The news of a married couple expecting their first child can be joyful. The first reaction is a loving embrace with each other. There have been creative ways in which couples have shared the news to their families of the joyful expectation of their first or possibly tenth child.
The Gospel of Luke recalls the account of the Visitation. Elizabeth, in her old age, is awaiting the birth of her child, who will be called John (and later, the Baptist). Mary has now conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit as told by the angel Gabriel. After Mary greets her cousin, but before Elizabeth gets the chance to reply, “the infant leaped in her womb,” overcome with joy. Elizabeth says, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” She too is filled with joy.
The prophet Micah prepares his way by heightening the expectation of an heir to the throne of David. One whose “origin is from of old who is to be ruler in Israel.” He will “shepherd his flock by the strength of the Lord, in the majestic name of the Lord, his God.” And “his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; he shall be peace.”
At this point, we are filled with much joyful expectation. We are on the cusp of Christmas. Preparations for the great feast are just about to be ready. There is also still time to pray as we await Christ’s advent. The prayer can be of petition, thanksgiving, blessing, or praise.
As we journey these final days to Bethlehem, let us pray with joy for the long-expected king, Jesus.
