Jesus' Baptism Means We are Beloved and We Have a Mission
Don’t you love the holidays? The feasts, good wine, abundance of family, gift-giving, and love in the air. The joy, singing, and instrumentation at Mass. It’s always a bit sad when it inevitably comes to a close. These are truly some of the best things we experience in life!
Even though the Christmas season continues, the day of the great banquet has come to an end. We experience this at Easter too.
As I reflected on another holiday and feast day passing, I pondered that holidays and feast days in this life are a foretaste of the heavenly banquet where we will enjoy all of these good things we long to receive for an eternity. Maybe that’s why we long for them so much and never want them to end.
Someday the feast will never end and the wine will never run dry. We’ll never have to say goodbye to our family and loved ones. We’ll never cease being in the joy of the Lord’s presence. All that goodness, love, and joy will be there forever. That’s what heaven promises us. That’s why we stay faithful day to day and do the work that Jesus asks of us… in anticipation that someday, we’ll be the guests at that forever banquet with God.
Keeping this long-view in mind as we go about our ordinary lives in the “in between” time between these great feasts can help us stay out of the post-holiday rut. These holidays are a foretaste of what is to come.
With that in mind, let’s get back to being great disciples and holy families that are worthy of that Kingdom and forever banquet with the Lord!
