Holy Week
If we ponder the severity of the cruelty that the soldiers and their minions inflicted upon Jesus and His precious body, in particular His Holy Face, could you ever imagine spitting at the Holy Face of Jesus? Slapping His cheeks back and forth like He was a punching bag? It makes me feel physically sick to even think that He went through that, all because of sin. Sin of every kind. Pride, lust, gluttony, laziness, neglect. The list goes on and on. Every evil thing that could be imagined was what He suffered for. The sweet Face of Jesus became unrecognizable. Blood, dirt, and spittle crept into the wounds at a constant rate. Oh! His poor mama! Our Mary, having to witness every bit as She suffered with the Sword that pierced Her Immaculate Heart. How did She hold Herself back from not screaming or trying to make it stop? Seeing Her child so cruelly treated? Knowing all along He was innocent of such torture, but being the only one to open the gates of Heaven for us.
His gaze looking down from the cross must have been heart-wrenching and such torment for Her. Looking down at this Sorrowful Mother, with time lingering as if for a hundred years.
The paintings or drawings of our Lord's crucifixion and passion cannot be truly depicted because of the severity of the torture. Woe to my soul for allowing me to be part of that cruelty! Woe to my sins! We all were you know. Every sin from the beginning of mankind, the present and the future had to be atoned for and our good Jesus took it on. He sweat drops of blood at the sight of the cruelty, as the devil, trying to weaken Him, showed Him. But our God is a mighty God. He is not weak. Sending His Son as an equal in all ways but sin.
Contemplate that beautiful Face the next time you look upon a Crucifix. Contemplate what that perfect body and face went through just for us to be redeemed. Contemplate the price He paid. The ransom for our sins.
Love and adore Jesus' Holy Face. The Face that someday we will greet at our deaths. Jesus' Holy Face can be seen here on Earth also. You just have to look hard enough with the remembrance that God created us all in "His" image.
