St. Bernard on the Second of Three Comings of Christ
Here Again we Await the Lord’s Return
It seems that man is always looking to the skies for a sign that might tell us the secrets of God’s Promise of a new world, but the clouds continue rolling by with no new news. What, we may wonder, would we be able to identify with certainty that any sign could be interpreted as God’s changes in our mixed up world? After all, God has blessed us with the ability to reach into the unknown and through much searching come up with some idea of advancing our intelligence a bit at a time. What we must always be aware of is the line to not cross without consideration of God’s input.
There are, of course, areas we not only should avoid but walk silently when these mysteries appear to be beyond our finite minds. God certainly implanted the quest to find things beyond the simple day to day attempts of finding and learning about the hidden secrets of the universe. Medicine is one that man has found to be a challenge and medical innovations are being opened to cure many diseases with the blessings of God. Hooray for man’s patience and trust that the Holy Spirit is with these giants in unraveling many mysteries of the human body.
Keeping in front of us are the mysteries of divine presence where some may be open to investigation, there are some that the finite mind may never find reason to and kept hidden from the mind of man. Even with the most intelligent minds of history unraveling some of God’s mysterious entity is far beyond the simple finiteness of man. A couple of these cloak and dagger incidents will never be discovered by man no matter how holy or saintly one may be. Can one understand the probability that God is eternal and therefore never had a beginning. Or the one mystery that has always pressed in on us is the Trinity. These alone become the stress of our searching without pages at the end of a mystery novel with some idea of a conclusion. It just will not occur and we must close the book on our solving technique to look for something that the finite mind can work with.
However, the final promise from God will occur when Christ returns during the Parousia when he will come to judge the evil of the world with a mighty entrance; “Then I saw the heavens opened, and there was a white horse; its rider was called “Faithful and True.” He judges and wages war in righteousness. His eyes were like a fiery flame, and on his head were diadems. He had a name inscribed that no one knows except himself. He wore a cloak that had been dipped in blood, and his name was called the Word of God. (Rev 19:11 - 13).
Anyone who could have been where John was on the isle of Patmos would no doubt have had an awakening ro a book of mysteries that theologians still scratch their heads with many questions. Here is where the final mystery of God’s final promise will take place, and we can then begin opening the book of questions that seem to allude us. (see Rev. 1: 9).
