Viganò's excommunication is well deserved
I've been wanting to write an article about clericalism for a long time. But first, let's define what clericalism is;
Some of those are really bad definitions, clericalism, but I think that the best one is “from the GNU version of the Collaborative International Dictionary of English.”. I also noticed that their website seems to be based in Ukraine,GNU Collaborative International Dictionary of English. That's interesting, because I want to talk about a clout chasing Eastern Catholic priest. I'm not going to say his name, but I am grateful for what he does to help Ukrainians, and how he does, in fact, care about Ukraine. It's refreshing that a self described conservative (whose wife is Ukrainian, remember, Eastern Catholic), is willing to call out the weird vatnik nonsense on the American right.

However, he has also said some very hurtful things about Michael Lofton. Now, I don't always see eye-to-eye with Mr. Lofton, but said priest seems to be suggesting that Michael is insincere with his attitude towards Eastern Catholicism. I don't buy that.
He seems to think that it's for “aesthetic reasons”, and not because he's sincere. Worse yet, is that he seems to take issue with the fact that Lofton dare have an interest in Eastern Catholicism.
This is where I take issue. I am not an Eastern Catholic, and never have been. I have not ruled out being one in the future, but, does this priest doubt my sincerity? If he does, he doesn't know anything about myself or my family's own history.
What about my friend of Slovak descent? Would he take issue to her becoming a Greek Catholic if she doesn't feel a call to the Latin church? I mean, Slovakia has historically ties to Eastern Catholicism. People don't convert because of this attitude.
And this is where I think the clericalism comes in. I also think it's a logical fallacy, because it seems to me to be an appeal to authority. (Once again, all I could find were sites that make the mistake of insulting Christians...and not even something most Christians would say, I think)!
I think that he makes the mistake of thinking he has authority over this guy for one very simple reason; he's a priest, and Lofton's not.
Let's remember what I said was the best definition of clericalism, “noun An excessive devotion to the interests of the sacerdotal order; undue influence of the clergy; sacerdotalism”.
Which is ironic, since I've seen this guy say nasty stuff about Pope Francis. I have no idea who his bishop is.
And, let's see what Pope Francis has said about clericalism,Pope Francis: Rigid priests are a manifestation of clericalism
“"Clericalism is a perversion of the priesthood: it is a perversion. And rigidity is one of the manifestations”.
Here we have, an inflexible priest, who is is sure that Mr. Lofton is wrong, and, based on previous comments, it seems to be based solely on Michael Lofton's interest in Eastern Catholicism.
This priest is not in Mr. Lofton's sui iuris, and thus, has no jurisdiction over him.
Yet, it seems to be, that he's using his authority as a priest to try to persuade people not to listen to Mr. Lofton.
I personally think said priest is causing an immense amount of spiritual harm without even realizing it.
He is, from what I can see, judging by appearance alone. Which scripture tells us NOT to do.
“Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment”. (John 7:24).
I don't think said priest has had any valid reason to judge Mr. Lofton on this.
The Bible never says, “Amen, Amen, I say to you, you must belong to which ever ritual church that I tell you to”.
No, in scripture, Jesus tells us (and, spoiler, I've quoted this before)!, “Go there and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”. (Matthew 28:19).
and, “And he said to them, “go into all the world and proclaim the gospel for the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned”.
(Mark 16:15-16).
This priest needs to worry about things that matter, instead of trying to get clicks on YouTube.
To be sure, there are clerics whom I think are NOT clout chasers, but are accused of it, like Fr. Mike Schmitz, Cardinal Dolan, and Bishop Barron. I don't always agree with them, but I think they have a much more balanced view of issues than someone whom, seems by all appearances, to be a clericalist.
Let's hope I'm wrong.
