To the Ends of the Earth: Character – Week 8, Day 4 - Being Frail Means We Can Stop Worrying
Oh, how I love your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,
for it is ever with me….
I hold back my feet from every evil way,
In order to keep your word.
I do not turn aside from your ordinances,
for you have taught me.
Psalm 119:97–98, 101–102
As Catholic men, the Gospel must be our guide, our life, and our very breath. We should meditate on the words of Scripture every day, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak truth to our hearts and empower us to live out those truths in all we say and do. God’s word makes us wise beyond learning, giving us insight to face trials and tribulations. It keeps our feet on the narrow path toward heaven as we follow God’s precepts and become men of integrity and strength. The Scriptures should be our guide for turning faith into action, for bearing witness to the power of Christ’s resurrection. The more we desire God’s law above the law of men, the more we will be transformed into men who bring the light of Christ to the world.
Most men have no problem memorizing sports statistics, learning hobbies and skills, and committing to those things we love and enjoy doing. As Catholics, we are called to desire God’s truth above all other things. Only Jesus can bring us the satisfaction and peace we need. Only in Christ can we become the men we were meant to be. Only as we seek God’s teachings above our earthly obsessions can we become true witnesses of what it means to be a man. This is the pure and satisfying life that God longs to give to those who commit to knowing him above all else. When we seek God first, we are transformed from sin and selfishness into righteous men who walk the road of salvation with total devotion to the cause of Christ.
Questions for reflection
How committed are you to knowing and living out the law of Christ’s love to the fullest?
How are you applying God’s word to your call to share his Gospel message of salvation with those who are lost?
What specifically will you commit to today in terms of reading and studying God’s word?
Praying with Scripture
Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation; for you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. (1 Pet 2:2–3)
