Paradox as the Interpretive Key to Christmas
Fr. Dan Rehill has a robust and sincere devotion to Our Lady. He described how in the book of Revelation we find a Guadelupe-like image of 'the Woman' giving birth to her children as the dragon lurked close by waiting to devour them. He is fully aware of the enmity between the Woman and the Serpent (Gn 3:15) and how the Serpent wants us all to despair and be in hell forever. But he reminded us that the head of the Serpent will be totally crushed in the end when the Immaculate Heart of Mary triumphs as foretold in several Marian apparitions.
Recently, Fr. Dan, an exorcist and the pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Columbia, Tennessee was interviewed by Catholic podcaster and pro-life advocate Lila Rose. In the fascinating interview, he shared a story about his first exorcism. He shares how, incredibly, an image of Our Lady of Guadelupe took over the exorcism and finished it by driving the demon (or demons) out of a hispanic, spanish speaking woman who, moments before the liberation, was convulsing, writhing and foaming at the mouth.
Here is his account of what happened, “Your first exorcism is kind of scary because you're alone. Normally, when I was just mentoring, I was just there watching and they're ( the lead exorcist ) in charge. I'll just be present but I don't have to think about it. I'm just watching.
But the first time you're there, and there's nobody coaching you, you know you're always a little nervous. You're thinking, ‘I hope I'm doing this right’.
The first one I did… uh the woman was not getting it. It didn't seem like anything was happening. She was just writhing on the floor in pain and contorting her neck and her body and limbs. She was screaming and sweating and uh foaming at the mouth and As I'm getting to the end of the rite where you pray the prayers of gratitude, I looked at her pastor who was in the room with me. I said, ‘We're just about done here and she's not better. Do you want to keep going or should we reschedule and do this again?’ I naively thought I could just keep going until it's out.
So he looked at me and said, ‘This is horrible. I can't watch this again. Just keep going. I said, ‘Okay’.
It was odd because he had just bought a huge, eight foot painting of Guadalupe that was in the room. It hadn't been hung in the church yet. The possessed woman was speaking Spanish so I just looked at her and I said, ‘Cry out to your mother for help!’... and she cried out to the Blessed Mother in Spanish and uh then immediately went into convulsions on the floor and was just like up and down and writhing all over the place. We had no idea what was happening. I was not praying any prayers at this point. I'm just staring at her thinking, ‘Like what, what is happening here?’ …and then she just stopped and she dropped to the floor completely motionless.
Part of me was wondering, ‘Is she alive?’ I got closer and saw that she was breathing and then she opened her eyes. She was back, completely delivered!
It didn’t have to do with me or the rite. It was all Our Lady of Guadalupe. I looked at the priest and said, “Had we known we could have started with this!” You know, it would have been over right away but you know it's how it is sometimes”. You can view the full interview here.
"Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us! Mother Mary, terror of demons, pray for us and protect us today and forever. Amen"
