Why Not Today?
Who does God Protect, Why and How does He protect?
Eileen Renders
Coming through risky surgeries, or a horrific car accident without injury, these events lead us to question whether this is luck or divine intervention. If it is God who protects us, and yet we witness others dying from similar events, we begin to wonder and ask questions.
In the Catholic New American Bible, Revised Edition, we can find answers. Psalm 91 titled Security under God’s protection says: You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shade of the Almighty say to the Lord; “My refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust.” He will rescue you from Fowler’s snares, from the destroying plague. He will shelter you with his pinions, and under his wings, you may take refuge. Psalm 121 The Lord My Guardian, Psalm 124 The Rescuer of the People.
There are many Psalms in the Bible referring to God’s protection. There are too many to include in this article, and some are lengthy and well worth the read.
God’s intervention has saved many, including the lame, the blind, and even those who have passed, such as Lazarus.
Who are they, the people that God protects? You can find the answer to that question also in many of the Bible’s Psalms. Examples can be found in Psalm 36- Human Wickedness and Divine Providence, and in Psalm 37 – The Fate of Sinners and the Reward of the Just. Again, there are many more Psalms that directly answer our questions, and are worth reading, but are too lengthy for any single article.
Conclusion: Throughout my lifetime thus far, of 85 years, I have often heard people say, and believe that they have been saved because of God’s Passion and death on the Cross for sinners. Make no mistake, our salvation is not unconditional! We must know that God provided us a means toward salvation through following His Commandments, refraining from sin, and loving and serving Him and His people through the lives we have lived. For each one of us will ultimately be judged according to how we lived and loved.
