Why We Shouldn't Complain During Lent
Every day we pray to God the Almighty Father, to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and to our Blessed Mother and the saints and angels for their intercessions. How many of us actually take the time to pray to the Holy Spirit? On average, most people don’t actually take a minute to tell the Holy Spirit “thank you” or “I love you, Holy Spirit.” Yes, we have times when we pray the “Come, Holy Spirit” prayer, but do we actually pray wholeheartedly to Him. If we don’t, then we probably should. (By the way, this is hypological…for all I know, everyone does stop and pray to the Holy Spirit.) Not only do we need to have a good relationship with the Father Almighty and Jesus Christ, but we should also have a good relationship with the Holy Spirit. Afterall, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity whom we adore, praise, and worship. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God the Father and God the Son, is in all of us. We receive the Holy Spirit when we are baptized. So, naturally, we should be taking time to pray to the Holy Spirit.
After watching a post on Facebook, I was inspired to compose a prayer to the Holy Spirit. In the post I watched, it gave 7 things that the Holy Spirit loves to hear from us along with Scripture passages that go with them. The verses for these are John 14:26 and 16:13, Ephesians 4:30 and 5:18, Galatians 5:16, Acts 1:8, and 1 Thessalonians 5:18. I encourage everyone to look up these verses. The prayer I wrote, which I call “A Personal Prayer to the Holy Spirit,” goes as follows:
Holy Spirit, I need You.
Holy Spirit, fill me today.
Holy Spirit, speak to me.
Holy Spirit, forgive me for grieving You.
Holy Spirit, help me to walk in Your ways.
Holy Spirit, use me for Your glory.
Holy Spirit, thank You for everything.
Amen.
There is also one more prayer I’ve composed while struck with divine inspiration. This past Sunday, after Mass, my RCIA/OCIA group visited Christ the King Passionist Retreat Center, located in Citrus Heights, California. While there, while sitting at a beautiful standing sculpture of our Blessed Mother holding a Crucifix to her heart, my inspiration came to me. Our Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary, has many titles, but there is one name that I affectionately call her, Mama Mary. I heard someone somewhere call her that long ago and it stuck with me. The prayer I wrote, Prayer to Mama Mary, goes as follows:
Mama Mary, help me love the way your Son wants me to.
Help me to live my life for Christ, and to honor you as my Mother.
Mama Mary, adopt me as your child so that I may be the brother/sister of Christ.
Mama Mary, show me the way to live my life as your son/daughter.
Amen.
They say that the prayers that come from the heart are the best kind of prayers to pray. I say that any prayer, whether a prayer that was written by a saint centuries ago, or a spur of the moment prayer can be the best kind to pray if your whole heart is in it. Of course there are some prayers I ritually pray every single day, consecration prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary and to the Holy Trinity and the Holy Spirit, a morning prayer, the Angelus, the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and my evening prayers…that seems like a lot, doesn’t it. Sometimes though, I feel that I don’t pray enough, especially on days when I’m busy with something and I end up forgetting to pray…I am definitely guilty of that! Well, Lent is coming up soon and one of my personal goals is to pray more, so wish me the best.
