3 Parameters of Prayer
What is Homeostasis? What Can it Do for Us, and How Can We Acquire it?
Mark: 1:1-8:
“Prepare the way for the Lord; clear a straight path for him.”
How do you accomplish that? Praying the Rosary helps. It promotes homeostasis. Homeostasis is a recurring concept covered in college biology and psychology courses. It refers to the body's natural ability to maintain a stable and balanced internal environment despite external changes, physically and mentally. It involves various physiological and mental processes that work together to regulate factors like temperature, blood sugar levels, blood pressure, heart rate, and more within a moderate range. This balance ensures that the body's cells function optimally and helps to keep bodily functions within safe limits. Homeostasis, as a fundamental concept in both biology and psychology, is essential for the overall mental and physical health and proper functioning of humans.
How is praying the rosary a healthy, homeostatic practice? Well recognized by the Catholic Church, praying the rosary fosters a deeper connection with God that enhances your spiritual journey. As our mind keeps focus on the life of Jesus, humility is fostered within us, our ego diminishes, and our inner peace is strengthened. Holiness is within our reach each time we venture into our special 20 minutes of meditation. It also connects us with family, friends, and the Catholic community through our shared faith.
Meditation and slower breathing through praying the rosary promote cardiovascular health and calmness, not to mention blood pressure regulation. It is no surprise that when we remove ourselves from the daily stresses of life, we are more relaxed and tranquil. The harmony and inner peace fostered by the disciplined meditation associated with the prayer of the Rosary is thus both a physical and mental experience.
Isaiah 40: 3-5
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness; prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
It is homeostasis that keeps the valleys of life raised up and the mountains of life humbled. It is homeostasis that results when our rough and rugged interferences, hassles, and anxiety-producing conflicts are mitigated. This happens to our inner beings as we daily meditate on the life of Jesus and rely on the intercession of the Blessed Mother Mary. This is when Jesus enters. A path has been made. So we now know what homeostasis is. We now know how beneficial it can be for our minds and bodies. We can acquire it through praying the Rosary, daily.
